Episode 57: Peru – Survival Story of Juliane Koepcke

On December 25, 1971, rescue planes flew above the Peruvian jungle searching for LANSA flight 508, which had disappeared the day before in a thunderstorm. It was nearly impossible for searchers to locate any signs of wreckage through the dense forest, but they were certain they were looking for plane remnants and bodies.

The chances that anyone could survive a crash from miles in the sky were surely impossible. Little did they know, a passenger was gaining consciousness on the forest floor, and readying herself to trek out of the wildly diverse and unpredictable jungle area of the Amazon Rainforest.

Today we’re talking about the survival story of Juliane Koepcke, the sole survivor of the deadliest lightning-strike disaster in aviation history.
