On February 19, 1994, a 31-year-old woman named Gloria Ramirez called paramedics when she began having trouble breathing. She had advanced cervical cancer and knew she needed immediate medical attention. Soon after she was brought to the emergency room at Riverside General Hospital in southern California, she went into cardiac arrest. Hospital staff began life-saving measures and suddenly, they began falling ill with various symptoms, like fainting and convulsions. It was a bizarre case that ultimately took chemists from a forensic center to “solve”.
